Census
When a family member is found always look at the page before and the one after.  Families tended to cluster next to one another. 

Delayed Birth Certificates
Began in 1940 necessary to obtain a Social Security card.
One had to have an Affidavit sworn to by a relative, family friend, or doctor who was present at their birth, or a baptismal record or family Bible were also accepted as proof. 
Required was;
Surname, Given name, Sex, # of child in order of birth (often not given) Date of Birth, Place of Birth, Father's Name, Father's Age, Father's Place of Birth, Mother's Name, Mother's Age, Mother's Place of Birth, Date of Application.


Fathers
often named their
1st son after his paternal grandfather
2nd after their maternal grandfather
3rd after themselves


Mothers
often gave their first born  their maiden name as its  middle name.

When a daughter married a son of a family, often her sister would marry one of the other sons.

Money
BUCK began when deer hides were traded.
DOUGH refers to paper money
DOLLAR  comes from the Germanic word” Thaler” used throughout Europe and Britain.
GREENBACK DOLLAR  when US paper money was printed with green ink
SAWBUCK  meant Roman Numeral X for a $10. bill
GRAND short for a grand amount or $1,000.


Social Security
Began in 1935 signed into law by President Roosevelt.

COUSINS     
children of a brother and brother, sister or sister,  or brother or sister.
     SECOND  
     children of the same great-    
     grand parents, but not the
     same grand parents.
     THIRD     
    
children of the same g-g-
     grandparents.
     FOURTH    
     
children of the same
     g-g-g-grandparents.


REMOVED   
two people from different generations.
     ONCE     children with one 
     generation between them.
     TWICE      children with two  
     generations between them.
